Literacy

In EYFS and Year 1, the ‘Read Write Inc. scheme of work is used to develop a secure understanding of phonics. The scheme provides children with a solid foundation and phonetical awareness upon which all future Literacy learning can be built. Further information on our phonics scheme can be found here.

In Years 2 and above, Literacy sessions are planned and taught around a high quality stimulus. These have been compiled into a long term plan* which ensures, during their time in school, children have the opportunity to enjoy a real variety of texts, ranging from traditional stories (including books by significant authors - past and present – male and female) to modern classics and beyond. This is further complemented by other media such as a film. By using stories ranging in themes from gender and race to ethnicity and disability, we aim for all children to have had the joy of being able to identify with the lead character of a story by the time they leave school.

Developing vocabulary and considering the impact of our grammatical choices on the reader forms a large part of our approach to writing. We believe time should be dedicated to teaching children the skills of writing, with an emphasis placed on modelling and improvement, in order for pupils to be confident in approaching any written task or challenge.

We follow a consistent approach to reading in which the key strands of comprehension are continually revisited, at an age appropriate level, to ensure our children are aware of the skills required to be a successful reader. We aim for all children to develop a love of reading and value the role it is to play in other areas of learning - from language acquisition to the understanding of information (be this a historical text or instruction manual).

Further information how you can support your child with reading at home can be found here.

*Please note that this plan may be used outside of the specified year in mixed age year groups.

 Years 2-6

Follow this link to view the progression of skills taught in Writing. The statements in bold show the key skills against which children are assessed; the additional statements indicate further challenge. This is an expanded version of our school’s assertive mentoring system which is used to track progress in writing. Both documents support our delivery of the Literacy Programme of Study from the National Curriculum.

Reading & Spoken Language

Reading

Available in the ‘Literacy Assessments’ section below is the documentation used to assess children in reading which supplement our Reading Progression of Skills. All year groups use test material, alongside teacher assessments, to make judgements against the key strands of reading. It is the development of these skills which form the basis of Guided Reading Sessions.

Spoken Language

Spoken Language is delivered in school through two key ideas: learning through speaking and listening and learning to speak and listen. A progression of skills can be found here.

 Literacy Assessments

The documents below show the assessment materials used for the majority of children at the end of each Key Stage in Reading and Writing*. Interim year groups use similar documentation which your child’s class teacher will be happy to talk through with you and can be found in your child’s white folder.

Key Stage 1

Key Stage 2

*Please note that these assessments form the basis of teacher assessment. Key Stage 1 children do sit a SATs test, but a final judgement is made using teacher assessment. In Key Stage 2, these teacher assessments are submitted as a final score in Writing, but the level achieved in Reading is based solely on a pupil’s score in their Reading SATs paper.
